System

The /System folder contains core macOS components that the operating system uses to start, run built-in features, and support essential system services.

What is System?

The /System folder is a core part of macOS. It stores operating-system files, frameworks, libraries, extensions, bundled system apps, and other resources that macOS needs to boot and function correctly. Many built-in features depend on files in this location, including the Finder, system settings, networking, graphics, security services, and command-line tools. Ordinary users usually encounter /System only when viewing the startup disk in Finder or following advanced troubleshooting steps. On modern versions of macOS, this area is protected by Apple and is not intended for routine cleanup or manual file removal. It is system content, not user-created data, and it supports the shared components used across the whole Mac.

Safety overview

Status: Mostly safe

This folder is part of macOS itself and contains protected system components. Removing or modifying items in /System can prevent macOS from starting properly, break built-in apps and services, or cause updates to fail. On current macOS versions, many contents are protected by System Integrity Protection and the sealed system volume, which is consistent with the folder’s operating-system role. Treat unexpected write access prompts, permission changes, or third-party instructions to edit this folder with caution.

Recommendation: Keep /System intact. Do not try to clean it manually or delete files from it to free space. If you are troubleshooting storage or system problems, focus on user data, caches, logs, apps you installed, or guided macOS repair steps instead. Only advanced administrators should interact with this folder, and then only for a specific maintenance reason.
