Library

/System/Library contains core macOS components used by the operating system, built-in apps, frameworks, drivers, fonts, and essential services.

What is Library?

/System/Library is a protected macOS system folder that stores many of the files Apple uses to run the operating system. It commonly includes frameworks, extensions, launch resources, fonts, private system components, preferences, and support files required by macOS and built-in features. Most users encounter it when browsing the disk, troubleshooting system behavior, or checking where Apple-provided components are stored.

Safety overview

Status: Mostly safe

This is a critical system location. Files in /System/Library are part of macOS itself, and changing or removing them can cause system instability, broken features, failed updates, or an unbootable Mac. Modern versions of macOS also protect much of this area with system security features.

Recommendation: Keep this folder intact. Do not manually delete items from /System/Library. If you are trying to free space or troubleshoot a problem, review user-level folders such as ~/Library instead, or use official macOS recovery and update methods for system issues.
