What is Extensions?

Extensions in /System/Library/Extensions are part of macOS and store Apple-supplied kernel extension bundles and other low-level system components used by the operating system. These files support core functions such as hardware communication, device support, and other services that work close to the kernel. Most users never open this folder directly, but it exists as part of the system software and may be referenced when troubleshooting startup, hardware, or compatibility issues. On modern macOS versions, Apple has moved many extension-style capabilities toward safer system extensions and user-space frameworks, but this folder remains part of the operating system’s protected system area. It is not ordinary app data or leftover content.

This folder belongs to macOS itself and contains protected system components. Changing, removing, or replacing items here can prevent hardware features, drivers, or parts of macOS from working correctly. Because these components operate at a very low level, any unexpected or altered contents should be investigated carefully, especially after installing security, VPN, driver, or hardware-management software.

Recommendation: Keep this folder and do not try to clean it up manually. If you are troubleshooting extension-related problems, review recently installed system software, drivers, VPN tools, or security products instead of deleting files from /System/Library/Extensions. If a Mac is unstable or a specific extension is suspected, use Apple-supported troubleshooting steps or remove the related app with its official uninstaller.
