Private
The /private folder is a protected macOS system directory used to hold core Unix-style folders such as tmp, var, and etc.
What is Private?
/private is a standard hidden macOS system folder. It exists because macOS uses Unix-style directory structures, and several important system locations are stored there, including /private/tmp, /private/var, and /private/etc. Many visible paths such as /tmp, /var, and /etc are linked to locations inside /private. Users may encounter it when viewing the startup disk, using Terminal, troubleshooting system files, or following advanced setup instructions.

This is part of macOS itself, not a typical app file. It can contain temporary files, logs, configuration data, and other operating system resources. Removing or altering contents in /private can break system behavior, networking, updates, installed software, or user sessions, and may also cause data loss in app or system state.
Recommendation: Keep this folder. Do not manually delete /private or its core contents. If you are investigating disk usage, review specific subfolders carefully and only remove items when you clearly know they are safe and nonessential.
