What is Fonts?

The /Library/Fonts folder is a shared macOS font location used for typefaces that should be available to every user account on the Mac. Apps such as design tools, office software, and creative utilities can read fonts from this folder so documents, presentations, graphics, and layouts display with the intended typography. Users may also add fonts here when they want them available beyond a single account. Because these fonts can be used across many apps, this folder often contains manually installed fonts, fonts added by creative software, and organization-provided typefaces for branding or publishing work. It is a normal part of the system’s shared library structure and is commonly encountered when troubleshooting font conflicts, managing duplicate fonts, or removing old typefaces that are no longer needed.

Recommendation: Keep the /Library/Fonts folder. If you need to free space or clean up typography issues, review the individual font files inside it and remove only fonts you know are unused. A safer approach is to disable or validate fonts with Font Book first, then delete specific third-party fonts only after confirming they are not required by your documents or apps.
