What is Extensions?

Extensions is the system-level folder at /Library/Extensions on macOS. It is used to store kernel extensions, also called kexts, which add low-level support for hardware devices, networking, security tools, storage controllers, audio interfaces, and other components that need to work closely with the operating system. macOS, hardware vendors, enterprise tools, and older utility software may place files here when they install drivers or system extensions built on legacy frameworks. Users most often encounter this folder when troubleshooting startup issues, driver conflicts, hardware support problems, or after uninstalling software that added a kernel extension. Because the contents can affect booting, device detection, and system stability, this folder is part of macOS system infrastructure rather than ordinary app data.

Files in /Library/Extensions can load at a very low level in macOS and may affect startup, hardware access, networking, storage, input devices, or security software. Removing the wrong extension can stop a device or utility from working, and in some cases can lead to boot or stability problems. If you are checking this folder, identify which product installed each extension and confirm the related hardware or software is no longer in use before removing anything.

Recommendation: Keep this folder itself. Only consider removing specific third-party extensions after you confirm they belong to software or hardware you have already uninstalled or no longer use. If a Mac is working normally, leave the contents alone; if you are troubleshooting, review individual extension files one by one so you do not break drivers or security tools you still need.
