What is Application Support?

Application Support is a standard macOS folder used to store data that apps need in order to run correctly. Software may place shared resources here, such as databases, downloaded components, templates, helper files, licensing data, and other support content that does not belong in documents or preferences. On many Macs, both Apple software and third-party apps use this location to keep files available for all users of the computer. Users most often encounter it while troubleshooting storage use, removing old software, or following support instructions. Because the folder can contain important data for many different apps, it is part of normal system operation and should be handled carefully.

The /Library/Application Support folder is a normal system-wide macOS location, but its contents are not all equally safe to remove. Deleting the entire folder or removing items without identifying which app uses them can break installed software, erase shared resources, remove activation data, or cause apps to recreate files with errors. Review subfolders one by one and only remove data that clearly belongs to software you have already uninstalled or no longer use.

Recommendation: Keep the main /Library/Application Support folder. If you are cleaning up space, inspect individual subfolders and remove only entries tied to apps you intentionally removed, since deleting active support data can cause apps to stop working or lose local data.
