What is File?

/.file is a hidden dotfile stored at the top level of a Mac volume. Files with names that begin with a period are usually not shown in Finder and are commonly used by Unix-based systems, scripts, or developer tools to store small pieces of state, markers, or configuration data. Because this item sits at the root path, it may be tied to a system-level workflow, a utility that wrote to the volume directly, or a manual command-line action. Ordinary Mac users do not normally interact with files in this location during everyday use. If you found it while reviewing storage or cleaning up your disk, treat it as a low-visibility technical file whose purpose should be identified before you change it.
