What is Applications?

The /Applications folder is a standard macOS folder that stores applications installed for use by all users on a Mac. Finder, Spotlight, Launchpad, and many system workflows rely on it as the normal place to find and open apps. Apps from the Mac App Store are commonly installed here automatically, and many other Mac apps are also dragged here during installation. This folder can contain regular apps, Apple utilities, and app bundles that look like single files in Finder but contain the resources needed to run the app. Users usually encounter /Applications when installing software, creating Dock shortcuts, or uninstalling apps by moving them to the Trash.

Safety overview

Status: Mostly safe

This is a standard macOS system folder, not a single app. The folder itself should remain in place because macOS and many app workflows expect it to exist. Removing individual apps from /Applications is a normal way to uninstall many programs, but deleting Apple-provided apps, shared utility apps, or the folder itself can break launching, updates, file associations, and shortcuts. Review each app inside before removing it, and check for an included uninstaller when the developer provides one.

Recommendation: Keep the /Applications folder. If you want to free space, review the apps inside it one by one and remove only the programs you no longer use, preferably with the app’s own uninstaller when available. Deleting the folder itself can disrupt normal Mac software management and app launching.
