The ~/Pictures folder stores your personal photo libraries, imported images, screenshots, and other picture files for everyday use on your Mac.
What is Pictures?
~/Pictures is the standard macOS user folder for storing images and photo-related libraries. It commonly holds your Photos Library, imported camera images, exported pictures, screenshots you moved manually, and folders created by photo-editing or media apps. Most users encounter it when using Photos, Image Capture, AirDrop, Finder, or creative apps that save images to a convenient personal location. Unlike caches or temporary files, this folder often contains original media and organized libraries that may be difficult to rebuild after deletion. It is part of your home folder and is meant for personal content, so its importance depends on whether you actively store photos or image projects there.

This folder usually contains personal media and photo libraries rather than disposable system data. Deleting items from ~/Pictures can permanently remove originals, albums, edits, metadata, and app-specific library structures if they are not backed up elsewhere. Large libraries may also be linked to iCloud Photos, external editors, or backup workflows, so removing files without checking their contents can disrupt those workflows.
Recommendation: Open ~/Pictures and review what is inside before removing anything. Keep the folder if it contains your Photos Library, family photos, creative work, or images you may want later. If you only find old exports or duplicate image folders and you have confirmed they are backed up, you can delete those specific items instead of removing the whole folder.
