What is Movies?

~/Movies is a built-in folder in your macOS home folder for video files and movie projects you want to store in your user account. People commonly use it for personal recordings, exported videos, downloaded movie files, screen captures, and media libraries created by video apps. Some Apple apps and third-party editors may save or suggest saving content here because it is an easy-to-find default media location. Unlike cache or support data, this folder usually contains user-created or user-saved files that may be important, large, and hard to replace. Users typically encounter it in Finder’s sidebar or within their home folder when organizing personal media.

This folder is generally safe in the sense that it is part of a normal macOS user account, but its contents often include personal videos and other media you may want to keep. Deleting files from ~/Movies can permanently remove recordings, exports, or downloaded media unless you have another copy or a backup. Some video apps may also reference files stored here, so removing items can break project links or leave missing media in libraries and edits.

Recommendation: Open ~/Movies and review the contents before deleting anything. Keep files you still watch, edit, or need for projects, and remove only items you recognize as unwanted after confirming they are backed up or no longer referenced by an app. If disk space is the goal, moving large videos to external storage or cloud backup is often safer than deleting the whole folder.
