What is Preferences?

~/Library/Preferences is a standard macOS folder that holds preference files for apps and system components in your user account. These files store settings such as window behavior, interface choices, account options, recent configuration changes, and other user-specific preferences. Many Mac apps create one or more files here so they can reopen with your chosen defaults and remember how you use them. You usually encounter this folder when troubleshooting an app, resetting corrupted settings, or cleaning up data left behind after uninstalling software. The contents are not documents or media; they are configuration data used to make apps and parts of macOS behave the way you expect.

Files in ~/Library/Preferences are normally plain settings data, but deleting the wrong one can reset app behavior, remove saved preferences, or force you to sign in or reconfigure options again. This folder commonly contains both Apple and third-party app settings, so changes can affect many different apps. Preference files are safer to remove one at a time for a specific app you are troubleshooting than to delete in bulk. Avoid modifying items you cannot identify, and quit the related app before removing its preference file so it does not immediately recreate or overwrite data.

Recommendation: Keep this folder. If you are troubleshooting one app, remove only that app's specific preference file after quitting the app, then reopen it and test whether the issue is fixed. If you are uninstalling software, you can remove leftover preference files that clearly belong to that app, but deleting the entire ~/Library/Preferences folder is not a good cleanup step because it will reset settings across many apps.
