What is Desktop?
Desktop is the folder at ~/Desktop in your home folder on macOS. It stores the files and folders that appear directly on your desktop, including documents you save there, screenshots, downloaded items you move there, and shortcuts or aliases you keep for convenience. Many people use Desktop as a temporary workspace for active projects because it is easy to reach from the Finder and from the screen background itself. If you use iCloud Drive with Desktop syncing enabled, the contents of this folder can also sync across your Apple devices signed in to the same account. Because it holds user-created and user-managed items, its contents vary widely from one Mac to another and may include important personal or work files.

~/Desktop is a standard user folder in macOS, not an app cache or disposable support folder. Files stored here are often personal documents, screenshots, installers, project folders, and aliases you placed for quick access. Deleting items from Desktop removes your visible desktop contents, and if Desktop syncing is enabled through iCloud Drive, those deletions can also affect synced devices.
Recommendation: Keep the Desktop folder itself. Remove only individual files or folders you recognize and no longer need, and move important items into Documents or another organized location if you want a cleaner workspace. If iCloud Drive syncs Desktop, check that setting before large cleanups so you do not remove files from other devices unintentionally.
