What is Desktop?
Desktop is your user account's main workspace folder at ~/Desktop. Items shown on your Mac desktop are usually stored here, including documents, screenshots, downloaded files moved manually, aliases, and folders you keep visible for easy access. Many people encounter this folder while organizing personal files, troubleshooting storage use, or deciding whether old desktop items are still needed.

The Desktop folder itself is a normal and important user folder, but its contents may include personal documents and other files you still need. Removing items from it can permanently delete your own data or make frequently used files harder to find. Deleting the folder itself is not recommended.
Recommendation: Keep the ~/Desktop folder. If you want to free space or reduce clutter, review the files inside it and remove or move only the items you recognize and no longer need. Be especially careful with screenshots, work documents, project folders, and aliases that point to other locations.
