Huggingface
The Hugging Face folder in ~/.cache stores downloaded models, datasets, and related files so compatible AI tools can reuse them without downloading again.
What is Huggingface?
~/.cache/huggingface is a user cache folder created by Hugging Face tools and libraries that download models, datasets, spaces, and related assets for local reuse. On a Mac, users commonly encounter it after running Python-based AI workflows with packages such as huggingface_hub, transformers, diffusers, or datasets. Its main job is to speed up future launches and reduce repeated network downloads by keeping previously fetched files on disk. The folder can contain hub cache data, dataset cache data, lock files, snapshots, and other temporary or reusable artifacts tied to machine learning workflows. This is not a core macOS folder, but deleting it can force apps, scripts, or notebooks that rely on Hugging Face content to download large files again and rebuild parts of their local state. Users who no longer work with those tools, or who need to recover disk space, can usually remove this cache safely.

Safety overview
Status: Safe
This folder stores reusable downloaded data for Hugging Face-based tools rather than essential macOS files. Removing it is generally safe, but apps, scripts, and notebooks that use Hugging Face models or datasets may need to download those files again, which can take time and bandwidth. If you still use local AI or machine learning workflows, expect slower first runs after deletion.
Recommendation: Keep this folder if you regularly use Hugging Face models, datasets, or related development tools and want faster launches and fewer repeated downloads. Remove it when you need disk space or no longer use those workflows. If you delete it, plan for re-downloads the next time a compatible tool needs cached content.
