Large & Old Files Finder helps locate files that meet size or age criteria. A result is not classified as junk; it is shown because it may deserve your attention.
Configure the minimum size
Open Settings → Scanning → Large & Old Files. The default minimum is 50 MB. Increase it to focus on the largest items or lower it to include more files.
Lower thresholds can create a much longer scan and result list.
Choose the location
- Open Files → Large & Old Files Finder.
- Select a folder or disk.
- Grant folder access when macOS asks.
- Start the scan.
- Keep external storage connected until it finishes.
Review the result
Use path, type, size, and dates together. Large results commonly include videos, archives, virtual machines, device backups, disk images, project assets, and cloud downloads.
An old modification date does not mean a file is no longer needed. Archives, tax records, family media, templates, and reference material may remain important for years.
Before removing a file
Open it or reveal it in Finder, identify any application that manages it, and confirm another copy or backup exists when necessary. Avoid editing managed library internals directly.
Remove a small batch, verify your applications and projects, and empty Trash only after confirming that required data remains available.
