There is no required universal schedule. macOS and applications manage much temporary data themselves.
Run a review when:
- Available storage is becoming low.
- A cache or log grows abnormally.
- You completed a large project or update.
- Downloads, installers, or attachments have accumulated.
- You want to investigate a specific storage change.
Avoid deleting active caches every day. Frequent removal can cause repeated downloads and rebuilds without lasting savings.
Use Overview to watch capacity and scan a focused location when needed. A monthly or occasional review may suit one Mac, while another needs only event-driven cleanup.
Measure the outcome and address applications that repeatedly generate unusual data.
