Applications use caches to start faster, render previews, avoid repeated downloads, and store derived data. A cache can usually be rebuilt, but rebuilding is not always immediate or free.
Before cleaning
Quit the owning application. Finish synchronization, media downloads, exports, builds, and updates.
Preserve cache-like data when you need offline access, have limited bandwidth, or are troubleshooting a reproducible issue.
Review cache results
- Run Cleanup → Junk Files.
- Expand application-cache categories.
- Check the app name and path.
- Deselect unknown apps and large caches you cannot easily recreate.
- Confirm a small batch.
After cleaning
The app’s next launch may be slower. Thumbnails, search indexes, web content, maps, models, media, or project previews may be downloaded or regenerated.
If the app behaves incorrectly, quit and reopen it. Use its built-in repair or cache reset when available.
Cache returns immediately
This is often normal: the application recreated data it currently needs. Repeatedly deleting an actively used cache provides little lasting benefit.
If growth seems abnormal, update the application and investigate its own storage settings.
