IntelliJ IDEA-EAP
IntelliJ IDEA-EAP is JetBrains’ pre-release macOS IDE for developing Java, Kotlin, and other supported languages before stable updates arrive.
What is IntelliJ IDEA-EAP?
IntelliJ IDEA-EAP is the Early Access Program edition of IntelliJ IDEA for macOS. It helps developers build and maintain software with code editing, navigation, refactoring, debugging, testing, terminal access, and version control tools in one IDE. IntelliJ IDEA is designed primarily for Java and Kotlin development, and it can be extended with plugins for many other languages and frameworks. The EAP channel gives users early access to upcoming features and fixes before they reach the stable release. It is intended for evaluation, testing, and feedback, so behavior can change between builds more often than in the standard release.
Key features
- Write and refactor Java and Kotlin code with intelligent editing tools
- Navigate large projects quickly with search, symbol lookup, and code insight
- Run, debug, and test applications from inside the IDE
- Work with Git and other version control systems without leaving the editor
- Use a built-in terminal for command-line tasks during development
- Extend language and framework support with plugins from JetBrains Marketplace

Safety overview
Status: Mostly safe
This is legitimate JetBrains developer software, but the EAP channel is pre-release software that may be less stable than the standard IntelliJ IDEA release. It is normal for an IDE like this to access your source code, project files, build tools, terminals, and version control data so it can edit, index, run, and debug projects. EAP builds are meant for testing upcoming changes, so use them carefully for important work and keep current backups of active projects.
Recommendation: Keep it if you actively test upcoming IntelliJ IDEA features or need to reproduce behavior in an EAP build. If you want the most predictable day-to-day environment, switch to the regular IntelliJ IDEA release and remove the EAP version when you no longer use it.
