Airfoil is a native macOS audio-streaming utility from Rogue Amoeba Software, Inc. that lets you send audio playing on your Mac to speakers and receivers around your network. It is designed for people who want more flexible whole-home audio than the built-in output controls typically provide. You can stream sound from music apps, web audio, or system audio to devices such as Apple TV, HomePod, Google Cast targets, Sonos speakers, Bluetooth speakers, iOS devices, and other computers. A common use case is playing the same audio in multiple rooms while keeping playback synchronized across different speaker types. Airfoil also works with the companion Airfoil Satellite app for remote control and receiving audio on supported devices.

It may request access related to capturing and routing audio, and that is normal for an app whose job is to transmit sound from your Mac to other devices. Some features can rely on additional audio components or system permissions, so you should grant access only if you intend to use those features. If you remove the app, audio-streaming features provided by Airfoil will stop working, but ordinary macOS audio playback will continue through your usual outputs.
Recommendation: Keep Airfoil if you use your Mac to send audio to wireless speakers, receivers, or other devices around your home or workspace. If you no longer use its streaming and multi-speaker features, you can remove it without affecting macOS itself.
