What is XnView?

XnView is an image viewing and management application published by Pierre-Emmanuel Gougelet through XnSoft/XnView. On macOS, the current cross-platform edition is XnView MP, which is positioned as the modern successor to the older XnView Classic line. It is commonly used to browse photo folders, inspect metadata, compare images, run slideshows, and convert or rename files in batches. The software supports a very wide range of image and graphics formats, including many camera RAW and modern formats that the built-in macOS viewer may not handle as flexibly. It also includes organizational tools such as thumbnails, folder browsing, search, duplicate finding, and metadata support for EXIF, IPTC, and XMP. Users often encounter it as a dedicated utility for photography workflows, archival image collections, or general-purpose format compatibility when Preview or Photos is not the right fit.

Key features

  • Browse images with thumbnail, fullscreen, filmstrip, and slideshow views
  • Open and manage a wide range of image, graphics, document, and camera RAW formats
  • Batch convert, batch rename, and resize image files
  • View and work with EXIF, IPTC, and XMP metadata
  • Compare multiple images side by side
  • Find duplicate files and search image collections
  • Create contact sheets and perform basic image adjustments

Safety overview

Status: Mostly safe

XnView is generally considered legitimate software when downloaded from the official XnView site. The publisher states that official downloads are provided without adware or spyware. As with many media utilities, it can access local folders, image metadata, and files you open, so the main risk is handling untrusted files from unknown sources rather than the app itself.

Recommendation: Keep it if you use it for image viewing, cataloging, metadata work, or batch conversion. If you no longer use it, removal is usually optional rather than urgent. Prefer official downloads and review any old helper files or settings only if you are cleaning up unused software.
