Silver Efex Pro 2
Silver Efex Pro 2 is a black-and-white photo editing application from DxO’s Nik Collection for creating monochrome images with film-style controls.
What is Silver Efex Pro 2?
Silver Efex Pro 2 is a photo editing app focused on black-and-white image conversion and finishing. It is part of the Nik Collection by DxO and is used by photographers who want detailed control over tonal contrast, film-style rendering, and selective adjustments. On Mac, it is commonly used either as a standalone editor or from supported host applications such as photo workflow tools and image editors. Typical tasks include converting color photos to monochrome, applying preset looks, refining structure and contrast, and adding finishing effects such as borders or grain. It fits best into photo-editing workflows where users want dedicated black-and-white tools rather than a general-purpose image editor.
Key features
- Convert color photos into black-and-white images with dedicated tonal controls
- Apply preset monochrome looks and fine-tune them for different photographic styles
- Adjust brightness, contrast, structure, and local detail for precise image shaping
- Use film-inspired grain and rendering options to create classic black-and-white looks
- Add finishing touches such as vignettes, borders, and selective emphasis
- Work alongside supported host photo editors as part of a broader editing workflow

Safety overview
Status: Safe
This is legitimate photo-editing software. It typically needs access only to the images you open or send to it from a host editor, which is normal for its purpose. Removing it can break Nik Collection black-and-white editing workflows and any plugin-based access from supported photo apps, but it does not usually create unusual system risk on its own.
Recommendation: Keep Silver Efex Pro 2 if you use Nik Collection or regularly edit black-and-white photos. If you no longer use these tools, removing it is usually fine, but you may lose access to its presets and plugin workflow from compatible photo applications.
