What is REW?

REW, short for Room EQ Wizard, is an audio measurement and room acoustics analysis app for macOS and other desktop platforms. It helps hi-fi listeners, home theater enthusiasts, musicians, and audio professionals measure how speakers and subwoofers behave in a room and understand issues such as frequency response, decay, distortion, and resonances. Users commonly pair it with a measurement microphone or audio interface to run test sweeps, inspect graphs, and compare results after speaker placement or treatment changes. REW also includes tools for real-time analysis, room simulation, and creating equalizer settings for supported DSP and EQ workflows. On Mac, it may request microphone access and permission to save measurement files, which is normal for this type of software. The software is published by John Mulcahy.

Key features

  • Measure room and speaker response with test sweeps
  • Analyze frequency response, decay, distortion, and impulse data
  • Use real-time analyzer tools to inspect live audio signals
  • Simulate room and speaker placement effects
  • Generate equalizer settings for supported DSP and EQ workflows
  • Compare multiple measurements to evaluate setup changes

Safety overview

Status: Safe

REW is legitimate audio measurement software. On Mac, microphone access and permission to save files are normal for taking measurements and storing project data. It can read and write measurement files you choose, so keep exports and project folders only where you want them stored. If you no longer use REW, removing it may also remove saved preferences and custom measurement data if you delete its support files.

Recommendation: Keep REW if you use your Mac for speaker setup, room correction, or audio testing. If you no longer measure or tune audio systems, you can remove the app and optionally clean up its leftover support files afterward.
