What is QuickLook Video?

QuickLook Video is a macOS utility for expanding Finder and Quick Look support for audio and video formats that macOS does not handle well on its own. It helps users preview files directly in Finder, view thumbnails, and surface metadata for a wider range of media types during everyday file browsing. This is especially useful for editors, media collectors, and anyone working with mixed-format video libraries such as MKV, AVI, WebM, WMV, Ogg, and other non-native formats. The app integrates with macOS features such as Finder, Quick Look, and Spotlight so supported media files are easier to identify and inspect without opening a separate player first. QuickLook Video is published by Jonathan Harris and is used as a focused helper rather than a full media player.

Safety overview

Status: Safe

QuickLook Video is a legitimate Finder and Quick Look extension for media files. It needs access to the files you preview so it can generate thumbnails, previews, and metadata, which is normal for its purpose. After installation or updates, Spotlight may re-index supported media and you may notice temporary CPU or disk activity while that finishes. Keep it only if you want broader media previews in Finder.

Recommendation: Keep QuickLook Video if you regularly browse or organize video files in formats that Finder does not preview well by default. If you do not use Quick Look for media or no longer need broader format support, you can remove it without affecting your personal files, but Finder will lose those added previews and metadata for unsupported formats.
