Perian is a legacy macOS media utility that extends QuickTime with support for many older video, audio, container, and subtitle formats. It was created by Perian to help Mac users play files that QuickTime did not handle well on its own, including formats commonly found in AVI and MKV files. Users typically installed it to improve playback compatibility in QuickTime-based apps rather than to use it as a standalone player. Its user-facing functions included broader codec support, subtitle handling, and import support for several legacy media types. Perian has been retired and is no longer in active development, so it is mainly encountered on older Macs, legacy workflows, or during system cleanup after migrations and upgrades.

Perian is legitimate legacy software, but it is old and no longer maintained. It integrates with QuickTime rather than acting as a separate player, so keeping it is only useful for older media workflows that still depend on QuickTime components. On current macOS versions, old multimedia components may provide little benefit and can create compatibility issues or leave behind outdated settings panes and support files. If you no longer rely on older QuickTime playback features, removing it is usually low risk.
Recommendation: Keep Perian only if you still use an older QuickTime-based workflow that needs its extra format support. If you do not recognize a current need for it, you can remove it and test your media playback afterward; modern players and newer macOS tools often replace its original role.
