What is NUTty?

NUTty is a Mac utility for monitoring network-connected UPS devices that use the NUT (Network UPS Tools) protocol. It helps Mac users keep track of battery status, power events, and estimated runtime from the menu bar, and it can automatically shut down the Mac when configured battery or runtime thresholds are reached. This makes it useful for home labs, offices, and anyone who relies on a network UPS to prevent data corruption during outages. The app supports alerts for power loss and restoration, custom shutdown rules, and monitoring more than one UPS on the network. NUTty is made for macOS workflows where the UPS is available over the local network rather than connected directly by USB.

Key features

  • Monitor compatible NUT-based UPS devices from the macOS menu bar
  • Show battery level, runtime, load, and current power status
  • Send notifications when utility power fails or is restored
  • Create shutdown rules based on battery level, runtime, or UPS status
  • Monitor multiple UPS devices on the same network
  • Store UPS connection credentials securely in macOS Keychain

Safety overview

Status: Mostly safe

NUTty is a legitimate utility for UPS monitoring and its Local Network access request is normal because it needs to communicate with supported UPS devices on your network. If you use notification features, it may also send alerts about power events to your other devices. Removing the app stops UPS monitoring, alerts, and any automatic shutdown rules you configured, so your Mac will no longer get that protection during outages.

Recommendation: Keep NUTty if you use a network UPS and want automatic monitoring or shutdown protection on your Mac. If you no longer use a compatible UPS, you can remove it, but expect to lose menu bar status, outage alerts, and configured shutdown actions.
