What is MacCam?

MacCam is a macOS camera app built for taking photos and recording video on a Mac. It is designed for people who want a simpler camera experience than a video-calling app and a more capable capture tool than Photo Booth. Users can shoot with the built-in Mac camera, use an iPhone through Continuity Camera, or switch to a supported external webcam. Captured media is saved into Apple Photos, which makes it easy to organize shots and sync them through iCloud Photos if that is already part of your workflow. The app also includes creative camera effects and portrait-style lighting tools for selfies, profile photos, casual videos, and quick content creation on Apple silicon Macs.

Key features

  • Take photos and record video from a Mac in one app
  • Use the built-in Mac camera, an iPhone with Continuity Camera, or a compatible webcam
  • Save captured photos and videos directly to Apple Photos
  • Apply classic Photo Booth-style effects while shooting
  • Use portrait-style lighting effects such as Portrait, Studio Light, and Edge Light
  • Adjust photographic styles including contrast, warmth, and tint during capture

Safety overview

Status: Mostly safe

MacCam needs access to your camera to capture photos and videos, and saving directly to Apple Photos may also require permission to add to your photo library. Those requests are normal for this kind of app. If you use an iPhone as a camera source, normal Continuity Camera behavior and Apple ecosystem permissions may apply. Keep an eye on what library access you grant, and remove camera or Photos access later in macOS Privacy & Security settings if you stop using the app.

Recommendation: Keep MacCam if you use your Mac for quick photos, webcam shots, or simple video capture and want everything to go into Apple Photos. If you do not use it, removing it is usually low impact beyond losing its camera features and any app-specific settings.
