Liviable
Liviable is a macOS utility for creating and running GUI Linux virtual machines on Apple silicon Macs using lightweight virtualization.
What is Liviable?
Liviable is a virtualization utility for macOS that helps users create and run GUI Linux virtual machines on Apple silicon Macs. It is designed for people who want a lightweight way to test Linux distributions, open Linux desktop environments, or maintain separate VM setups without a large hypervisor interface. The app uses a bootable Linux ISO to build a VM, then lets you choose settings such as CPU cores, memory, and display resolution before starting it. It also supports shared folders with the host Mac and can enable Rosetta 2 inside supported Linux VMs so Intel binaries can run there. Liviable is published by Howard Oakley through The Eclectic Light Company and is aimed at users who want practical Linux VM workflows on modern ARM-based Macs.
Key features
- Create Linux virtual machines from bootable ISO installer images
- Adjust VM resources such as CPU cores, memory, and display resolution
- Run multiple Linux virtual machines as your Mac's hardware allows
- Share folders between the host Mac and supported Linux VMs
- Use Rosetta 2 in supported Linux VMs to run Intel binaries
- Reuse saved VM settings when starting existing virtual machines

Safety overview
Status: Mostly safe
Liviable is legitimate virtualization software for Apple silicon Macs. It works with Linux installer images and virtual machine bundles, and shared-folder features can expose host files to the guest OS when you choose to use them. That access is normal for a virtualization tool, but you should share only the folders a VM actually needs and use trusted Linux images. Removing the app will stop you from launching or creating VMs with it, but your VM files may still remain on disk until you delete them separately.
Recommendation: Keep Liviable if you use Linux virtual machines on your Mac or want a lightweight test environment for Apple silicon. If you no longer run Linux VMs with it, you can remove the app and then decide separately whether to keep or delete any VM bundles you created.
