What is Glyphary?

Glyphary is a desktop note-taking and knowledge management app built for people who work with local Markdown vaults. It helps users open folders of notes directly from disk, edit extended Markdown in a visual workspace, and organize files, tasks, links, and related content without importing everything into a cloud service. The app supports common vault workflows such as browsing files, searching note contents, starring important pages, and switching between multiple vaults. It also includes tools for working with tasks, calendar notes, images, canvas files, and structured note properties. On Mac, Glyphary integrates with Finder-style file actions and native menus, and it can use an OpenAI-compatible backend for optional writing and editing assistance. Glyphary is published as an open-source desktop app and is suited to personal knowledge bases, writing projects, research collections, and Markdown-first note systems.

Safety overview

Status: Mostly safe

Glyphary is a local Markdown workspace designed to work directly with folders on your Mac, so it can read and modify the notes you open in its vaults. That file access is normal for its purpose. Optional features such as global capture on macOS may request Accessibility access, and AI tools require you to enter your own compatible backend details if you choose to enable them. Keep it if you actively use local Markdown notes, and be mindful that editing, moving, or deleting files inside a vault changes the files stored on disk.

Recommendation: Keep Glyphary if you use Markdown vaults, linked notes, or local knowledge bases on your Mac. If you no longer use it, you can remove the app and its support files, but any notes stored in your own vault folders will remain wherever you saved them unless you delete those folders separately.
