What is Data Rescue?

Data Rescue is a native Mac data recovery app for finding and recovering lost files from damaged, deleted, reformatted, or inaccessible storage devices. It is designed for home users, students, creative professionals, and IT users who need to retrieve documents, photos, videos, and other files from internal drives, external hard drives, USB flash drives, and SD cards. The app can scan a drive, preview recoverable data, and save recovered files to another destination so the original source is left unchanged during recovery work. It also includes tools for deeper recovery workflows such as cloning a failing drive and creating a recovery drive for situations where the main Mac startup disk cannot be scanned in the usual way. Data Rescue is published by PROSOFT Engineering, Inc. and is available for macOS.

Key features

Safety overview

Status: Mostly safe

Data Rescue is legitimate recovery software, but it works by accessing disks and reading large amounts of file data, which is normal for its purpose. During recovery, save recovered files to a different drive to avoid overwriting data you are trying to restore. If a drive may be failing physically, minimize repeated scans and consider cloning it first to reduce stress on the hardware.

Recommendation: Keep Data Rescue if you use it for file recovery or want a recovery tool available for emergencies. If you no longer need it, you can remove the app, but do so only after any active recovery work is finished and after you have saved recovered files elsewhere.
