What is Canvas?
Canvas is an education app that helps students access course materials, keep up with assignments, check grades, and participate in class from their devices. It is designed for learners who use Canvas at a school, college, university, or training program. In the app, users can read announcements, review calendars and to-do items, send messages, join discussions, take quizzes, and submit assignments including files and media. Offline course access is available for studying without a constant internet connection, though some institution-specific tools may still require an internet connection or separate sign-in. On Mac, this title is distributed through the App Store as the iPad app running on Apple silicon Macs rather than as a traditional standalone desktop Canvas application. Instructure also offers separate apps for teachers and parents for those roles.

Canvas is legitimate education software used to access coursework and school communication. It may store class materials for offline use and show notifications for due dates, messages, and announcements, which is normal for a learning app. The app can contain school-related documents, submissions, grades, and messages, so use your usual account security practices and sign out if the Mac is shared. Removing it only affects access through the app and any offline content saved inside it.
Recommendation: Keep Canvas if you use a school or training program that runs on Canvas and want quick access to assignments, grades, and messages from your Mac. If you no longer use Canvas, you can remove the app and switch to your institution’s Canvas website in a browser if needed.
