What is Authy Desktop?

Authy Desktop is a security app for macOS that lets users view and generate time-based one-time passwords for two-factor authentication. It was created to help people sign in to websites and services that require an extra verification code in addition to a password. Common use cases included accessing work accounts, developer tools, financial services, and personal online services from a Mac without reaching for a phone each time. The app supported synced tokens across devices and local code generation for use when a network connection was unavailable. Authy was published by Authy Inc., and the desktop app line for Mac, Windows, and Linux was retired in March 2024. Users who still have it installed may encounter it during cleanup or while transitioning to another authenticator workflow.

Safety overview

Status: Use with caution

Authy Desktop is legitimate authentication software, but the desktop app reached end of life on March 19, 2024 and no longer receives support or updates. Because it handles login tokens for other accounts, keeping an unsupported authenticator on your Mac creates extra risk if you continue relying on it. If you still use Authy, move your account access to a currently supported authenticator and make sure you can sign in before removing the desktop app.

Recommendation: Remove Authy Desktop if you no longer depend on it. If you still use it for sign-in codes, first switch those accounts to a supported authenticator on your phone or another maintained app, confirm recovery options work, and then uninstall the desktop app.
