Afterglow is legitimate software for running classic screen saver modules on macOS. Its optional screen saver installation and access to files you import are normal for this kind of app. If you add vintage modules from outside sources, use trusted archives and keep in mind that compatibility varies, so some content may not work as expected. Removing the app can also remove imported modules and related data if you delete its support files.
Recommendation: Keep Afterglow if you use it to browse, import, or run classic After Dark modules on your Mac. If you no longer want the app, you can remove it along with its installed screen saver component and support data, but do that only after backing up any imported modules or settings you want to keep.
