Renaming files one by one can be frustrating, especially if you have a lot of them. Fortunately, macOS has a built-in feature that lets you rename multiple files at once—no extra software needed!
1. Select the Files You Want to Rename
- Open Finder and go to the folder where your files are.
- Hold Command (⌘) and click each file you want to rename.
- Or, if you want to rename everything in the folder, press Command (⌘) + A to select all.
2. Open the Rename Tool
- Right-click (or Control + Click) on any selected file.
- Choose Rename [X] Items… from the menu.
A window will pop up with three renaming options.
3. Choose a Renaming Method
macOS gives you three ways to rename files in bulk:
✅ Replace Text: Find and replace part of the filename.
- Example: Change
IMG_1234.jpgtoVacation_1234.jpg.
✅ Add Text: Insert new text before or after the filename.
- Example: Change
Report.pdftoFinal_Report.pdf.
✅ Format: Completely rename files with a new numbering system.
- Example: Rename
IMG_1234.jpg,IMG_5678.jpgtoTrip_001.jpg,Trip_002.jpg.
4. Click Rename and You’re Done! 🚀
Tip: Undo a Mistake
If you rename files incorrectly, don’t worry! Press Command (⌘) + Z right away to undo the change.
